Peace at the End of the World
I took the picture on the left in Finisterre, Spain—what was long considered the end of the world (hence “fin” and “terre”). This jut of land with its lighthouse is where the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage ends if one continues to the coast from Santiago de Compostela. The pole impressed me staking out its command of peace on earth. Three years later while in a similar “end-of-earth” place in Amakusa (“Heaven’s Grass”), Japan, near the southern tip of the mainland, outside of Oe Catholic Church, stood the same pole and I savored the connection.
